Heat and moisture production in growing-finishing pigs and broilers CIGR Journal
Aarnink-FBC, Andre.
Heat and moisture production are important parameters for designing ventilation and climate control systems in livestock housing. In 2002 a report was published of the CIGR Section II Working Group on Climatization of Animal Houses ‘Heat and moisture production at animal and house levels’ with formula to calculate heat and moisture production for different livestock categories. The objective of this paper is to discuss these CIGR formula for growing-finishing pigs and broilers. Results from calculated heat and moisture production with the relatively simple formula in the CIGR report were compared with results from a more comprehensive model. From this comparison the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The relatively simple CIGR formula to calculate total...

ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR PREDICTION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PRODUCTIVE VARIABLES OF BROILERS REA
Abreu,Lucas H. P.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Bahuti,Marcelo; Hernández-Julio,Yamid F.; Ferraz,Patrícia F. P..
ABSTRACT Due to a number of factors involving the thermal environment of a broiler cutting installation and its interaction with the physiological and productive responses of birds, artificial intelligence has been shown to be an interesting methodology to assist in the decision-making process. For this reason, the main aim of this work was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict feed conversion (FC), water consumption (Cwater), and cloacal temperature (tclo) of broilers submitted to different air dry-bulb temperatures (24, 27, 30, and 33°C) and durations (1, 2, 3, and 4 days) of thermal stress in the second week of the production cycle. Relative humidity and wind speed were fixed at 60% and 0.2 ms−1, respectively. The experimental data...

ABSTRACT Given the need to obtain systems to better control broiler production environment, we performed an experiment with broilers from 1 to 21 days, which were submitted to different intensities and air temperature durations in conditioned wind tunnels and the results were used for validation of afuzzy model. The model was developed using as input variables: duration of heat stress (days), dry bulb air temperature (°C) and as output variable: feed intake (g) weight gain (g) and feed conversion (g.g-1). The inference method used was Mamdani, 20 rules have been prepared and the defuzzification technique used was the Center of Gravity. A satisfactory efficiency in determining productive responses is evidenced in the results obtained in the model...

POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION DETECTION OF AVIAN LEUKOSIS VIRUS DNA IN VACCINES USED IN POULTRY Rev Salud Anim.
Acevedo,Ana María; Rodríguez,Edisleidy; Uffo,Odalys; Relova,Damarys; Noda,Julia; Díaz de Arce,Heidy.
Avian leukosis viruses (ALV) provoke a variety of trasmissible bening and malign tumoral diseases affecting birds. Chickens are affected by six subgroups of ALV designs A, B, C, D, E and J of more recent world dissemination. These viruses are potential contaminants of live vaccines used in poultry. In order to research the presence of DNA from ALVs as contaminants of viral commercial vaccines to be used in poultry, different Marek´s disease vaccines were screened by a reported polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay designed to detect all subgroups of ALVs. DNA samples extracted from seven vaccines were submitted to PCR using primers for a conserved region of env gene of HPRS-103. ALV sequences were detected in seven samples (100%). The methodology employed...

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT FEEDING STRATEGIES ON FORAGING ABILITY AND NUTRIENT DIGESTIBILITY OF A SLOW GROWING ORGANIC BROILER GENOTYPE Organic Eprints
ADEBOYE, OLUWAKEMI RACHAEL.
The organic poultry production in Europe is increasing. The use of organic feed has been seen as one of the major constraint especially the protein sources, and efforts have been made to secure the future of this system. Access to outdoor area by organic chicken has been described as a means to partly compensate for their nutritional needs and the knowledge of feed items selected in the outdoor area can ease 100% transition to organic feed. An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of different feeding strategies on the foraging ability and nutrient digestibility of slow growing organic broilers with or without supplement. A total number of Seven hundred and twenty birds (RedBroja and Hubbard genotypes) have access to three different diets...

Industrialization and Contracting in U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Korb, Penelope J.; Banker, David E..
This paper examines the industrialization process of U.S. agriculture by examining the trends in the number of farms, the concentration of production during the last decade, and the dynamics of farm survivability, entry, and exit underlying aggregate statistics. We next examine vertical coordination as part of the industrialization process and highlight contracting in the poultry industry. The analysis provides evidence that production is continuing to be concentrated on a smaller number of farms at a relatively rapid rate, in spite of the stability in the number of farms. Although contracting clearly dominates the broiler industry, it is less prevalent in egg and turkey production, where other forms of vertical coordination are likely established.

Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of Binzalkonium Chloride, Iodine, Gluteraldehyde and Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfectants against Avian Salmonellae Focusing on Genotypic Resistance Pattern of the Salmonellae Serotypes toward Benzalkonium Chloride Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Aksoy,A; El Kahlout,KEM; Yardimci,H.
ABSTRACT Using disinfectants in poultry houses is a common practice to ban the zoonotic pathogens like Salmonella. A major concern in using disinfectants is the emergence of bacteria strains that resist some disinfectants. This phenomenon is manifested in the resistance of some Salmonella serotypes against quaternary ammonium compounds. Such resistance is attributed to qacEΔ1 gene which may be possessed by some Salmonella serotypes. This work aimed to evaluate the resistance of Salmonella serotypes (S. Typhimurium, S. Infantis and S. Entiridis) against different disinfectants (benzalkonium chloride, iodine, gluteraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide). The effect of the disinfectants were evaluated by treatment of the bacteria with different concentrations...

Mussel shells as an environment enrichment and calcium source for floor-housed laying hens Organic Eprints
Alm, M.; Tauson, R.; Wall, H..
Feather pecking is still a behavioral problem in laying hen flocks, resulting in impaired welfare and economic losses. Environment enrichment, e.g., providing access to litter, to increase foraging behavior in laying hens has been shown to decrease feather pecking. This study investigated the effect of spreading crushed mussel shells (particle size 10 to 20 mm) in the litter area as an environment enrichment and source of calcium for layers receiving a commercial feed and for layers given a feed with 40% less calcium. These treatments were compared with a control involving hens given the commercial feed, but no mussel shells in the litter. The study included 900 Dekalb White layers housed in a single-tier floor system during a production cycle (20 to 72 wk...

Farmer investment into biosecurity on broiler and layer farms in Bali AgEcon
Ambarawati, I Gusti Agung Ayu; Prasetyo, Bugie Kurnianto; Patrick, Ian.
This paper measures the cost of implementing biosecurity on broiler and layer farms in Bali. Farmer investment in biosecurity is analysed to determine if there is any difference in the implementation of biosecurity between broiler and layer farms. Data is taken from a survey of 60 layer and 60 broiler smallholder farmers in Bali in 2009. While secure boundary fencing and farm gate locks are more common on layer farms, broiler producers are more likely to have a footbaths at the shed door. In this analysis, biosecurity investments include the quality of fencing and gates, presence of locks on gates, management changes required to minimise staff and visitor movement onto and in the farm, costs of minimising vehicle entry, use of vaccination and disinfectant,...

NON-TARIFF BARRIERS AND POLITICAL SOLUTIONS TO TRADE DISPUTES: A CASE STUDY OF U.S. POULTRY EXPORTS TO RUSSIA AgEcon
Ames, Glenn C.W..
This paper examines the recent U.S.-Russian trade dispute over poultry meats exports. Russia embargoed U.S. poultry on February 16, 1996, alleging that the U.S. inspection system did not meet Russian standards. An agreement signed on March 25, 1996, establishing an inspection criteria for exports to Russia and a testing protocol for salmonella and residues, resolved the trade dispute. Analysis indicates that Arkansas leg quarters prices are closely linked to U.S. poultry exports to Russia.
